Faith Workout: Dig Deep

“Wherever your treasure is, there your heart will also be” – Matthew 6:21 READ Luke 6:46-49 REFLECT Define success.  What is it?  Is it found in wealth, health, or reputation?  Jesus explains in His Sermon on the Mount that the system of this world has it upside down.  We define success and happiness by riches, experiences that fulfill, comfort, and reputation.  But, He explains these things can be lost in a moment, so we should seek a treasure that is permanent. Jesus tells a story of two men building houses.  One man digs deep into the earth and builds upon a solid rock.  The other simply builds his house on a plot of ground.  When the storms come, the house without foundation is ruined, but the house on the rock stands strong. As athletes, we think of “digging deep” to find another gear or a deeper motivation that can carry us through a difficult time in our training.  This is vital in building a “house” that will stand through the storms of this life.  If our security is found in temporary surface-oriented experiences of life, we could easily topple when we encounter our struggles.  True security comes when we dig deep and find the Rock that never moves.  He is our foundation and our treasure. Let each carpenter who comes on the job take care to build on the foundation! Remember, there is only one foundation, the one already laid: Jesus Christ. Take particular care in picking out your building materials. Eventually there is going to be an inspection. If you use cheap or inferior materials, you’ll be found out. (1 Corinthians 3:9-15 – The Message) RESPOND 1 – What is most impressive to you – financial power, physical performance, or great reputation?  How could each of these be destroyed in a moment? 2 – How do you define success? 3 – What steps can you take to further trust in Christ as your only source of security?
